One crew member is dead and another is missing after a French fighter jet crashes in a fireball near Nancy
A Mirage 2000D like the jet that crashed in a fireball during a Tuesday night training mission near Nancy, killing one crew member while a second remains missing.
A Mirage 2000D from Air Base 133 at Nancy-Ochey lost radar contact and stopped answering radio calls on Tuesday night, then witnesses heard an explosion. Colonel David Pappalardo said at least one of the two crew appears to have been unable to eject. On board were a 'young pilot in training' and a 'highly experienced' weapons systems officer. The body recovered has not yet been publicly identified.
Thick fog stopped helicopters searching overnight, and the first wreckage was found around 4am.
Debris came down in fields and forest between Rogeville, Domèvre-en-Haye and Tremblecourt.
A judicial investigation is under way, and the air force has called it an 'exceptional accident'.
