A Somali national died and two others were injured after a dispute broke out among residents at Ballymullen Barracks, a former army facility in Tralee converted into an asylum centre that houses up to 50 single male international protection applicants. Gardaí arrested a man in his late 40s at the scene; he is held under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act for up to 24 hours. The Office of the State Pathologist has been notified, and a murder incident room has been opened at Tralee Garda Station.

All three victims and the arrested man are believed to be Somali nationals.

The Department of Integration has run the former barracks as an asylum centre since May 2024, under a one-year licence agreement with the Department of Defence.

Tralee Mayor Angie Baily said the incident had left the town in 'a dark mood', calling it something locals are 'certainly not accustomed to'.
