Over 1,000 birds are killed or injured after slamming into skyscrapers in Chicago during one weekend of US migration
Volunteers from Chicago Bird Collision Monitors worked from dawn to sunset on Saturday as birds struck glass windows above their heads. More than five million migrating birds crossed Cook County on Friday night alone. Director Annette Prince said the hotline rang every 30 seconds. She called it one of the deadliest days in recent memory and the worst since October 2023, when 3,000 birds were hit.
Monitor Jennifer Bell said: 'Every five seconds, there would be a bird.'
DuPage Wildlife Conservation Center took in more than 250 injured birds on Saturday alone.
Campaigners are pushing for a bird-safe building law, noting McCormick Place cut collisions by 95 percent.
