Dr Lola Salem, a French and music lecturer at Oriel College, Oxford, has denied possessing four indecent images of children — three Category B and one Category C — alleged to have been on her device between 2021 and 2023. Salem, 33, of Kensington and Chelsea, pleaded not guilty on 23 July and is next due at Oxford Crown Court on 7 December, with a full trial set for March 2028. Oriel College suspended her in June 2026 after learning of the charges; Oxford University has since clarified that she is a college tutor rather than a member of university staff.
Category B images are the second most serious classification under UK law.
Salem holds a research fellowship and was writing a book on the philosophy of the post-cultural state and its effects on art.
Oriel College said it was 'made aware of serious charges against an employee in June 2026' and that she was 'suspended, pending the outcome of legal proceedings'.
