Parents could face five years in jail for opposing their child's gender transition under Labour's 'chilling' draft Bill, report warns

A Policy Exchange report by barrister Akua Reindorf KC and Baroness Kishwer Falkner warns that Labour's draft Conversion Practices Bill is "ideological, authoritarian and unworkable" and would criminalise parents who question or discourage a child's gender transition. Baroness Falkner, former chairwoman of the Equality and Human Rights Commission, says the Bill "breaches numerous rights, including the right to a fair trial, the right to a family life and freedom of expression."
Olympic swimmer Sharron Davies backs the report, warning the Bill gives "the criminal law a seat at the kitchen table" at "the most challenging" moments of family life.
Critics warn the five-year maximum sentence could apply to parents who simply refuse to use a child's chosen name or oppose irreversible surgery.
The Bill is currently undergoing pre-legislative scrutiny; calls are now growing to scrap it entirely before it reaches a Commons vote.
