Passengers sit metres from a blowtorch-like blast of flames as a LATAM jet's engine catches fire before takeoff in Peru
Footage shot inside the cabin of LATAM Airlines flight LA2302 captures fire blazing just beyond the windows while passengers remained seated on board. The Airbus A320 had been about to depart Lima's Jorge Chávez International Airport bound for Piura on Monday when its left engine caught fire. Flames spread across sections of the left wing and landing gear as thick black smoke rose into the sky. Airport firefighters extinguished the blaze before passengers were assisted off the aircraft.
LATAM described the incident as an 'unforeseen technical event' and confirmed there were no injuries.
Video of passengers disembarking the jet showed no evacuation slides being used.
Peru's aviation safety authority has opened an investigation into the engine failure.
