Paul Mescal and Gary Lineker join 142 stars demanding a change to the terror law that pulled Sally Rooney's books
Sally Rooney, whose publisher Faber & Faber stopped supplying her novels after she pledged royalties to Palestine Action, a group whose supporters face up to 14 years in jail.
Prime Minister Andy Burnham refused to budge at PMQs, defending the "rigorous and evidence-based process" behind the Palestine Action ban. The open letter in the New Statesman opens: "Sally Rooney is a writer, not a terrorist." Signatories include Jessie Buckley, Daisy Edgar-Jones, Jeremy Corbyn, Susan Sarandon and Nobel laureate JM Coetzee. They brand the legislation "draconian" and an "affront" to free speech.
Faber stopped supplying her novels because the law bars it from passing UK earnings to her.
Rooney had pledged royalties to Palestine Action, and supporting the group carries up to 14 years in jail.
Sales of Rooney's books jumped nearly 300% in a week, and Bristol bookshop Bookmarked sold out within hours.
