A man in his 50s was hit by a lorry and several other vehicles on the M2 coastbound carriageway near Medway Services in Kent at around 9.10pm on Tuesday. Kent Police confirmed he died and said his family has been notified. Officers are asking anyone who witnessed the incident or has dashcam footage from the area to come forward.

Both directions of the M2 are shut — junctions 3 to 5 coastbound and junctions 5 to 4 London-bound — and are expected to stay that way for a "significant period of time."

Queues have built to three miles on the London-bound side and two miles coastbound, with knock-on congestion on the A249, A229 and A2 near Rainham.

London-bound drivers are being diverted via the A249 to the M20, while coastbound traffic is directed along the A229 through Maidstone and back via the A249.
