Kyle Quin Schrock, 36, from San Diego, broke his back, ribs and sternum when the ground gave way under him while he was hiking in Madeira on October 11. As he hung over the drop, he heard a voice telling him a helicopter was coming. Wearing an oxygen mask in hospital, he told his 1.3 million Instagram followers: 'I thought it was my death.' His family say he is waiting for spinal surgery.

His lungs also need draining while he recovers in intensive care.

Sister-in-law Tara Schrock's GoFundMe warns that months will pass before he can work again.

He has vowed to 'get back out there and enjoy life again.'
