Piers Morgan released private legal correspondence — letters between his solicitors Schillings and the publisher's lawyers Wiggin — after Earl Spencer told a New York book event audience on Tuesday that he was not facing any legal action, a claim Morgan called "his latest lie." The disputed work is Swan Song: Diana, My Sister, which wrongly linked Morgan to hidden-camera gym photographs of Princess Diana published in the Daily Mirror in 1993, a time when he was in fact working at The Sun.
Morgan is seeking the book's withdrawal from sale and damages payable to The King's Trust, with publisher Penguin named as a party to the action.
Spencer apologised last week for the error and pledged to correct future editions, but copies already in circulation continue to be sold around the world.
Morgan told Fox News that the defamatory content spans "several pages" and that an apology alone, without removing the offending material from the book, falls short of what is required.
