A gunman opened fire on a crowd of teenagers outside George K. Cupples Stadium on Pittsburgh's South Side at around 9.50pm on Thursday, shooting two boys and a girl who were all hospitalised in stable condition. Police Chief Jason Lando said officers were already on the scene breaking up post-match fights between fans of Westinghouse High School and University Prep when the suspect drew a weapon and discharged several rounds before fleeing.

Lando described the scene as 'chaotic' and admitted officers were 'within feet of the incident handling another matter at the time.'

Police have not yet released a description of the male suspect, and drones have been deployed to assist the search.

Pittsburgh Public Schools spokeswoman Ebony Pugh said the district is 'deeply concerned' and will work with police to support students and staff affected.
