Police are treating a fire at a Cambridgeshire site earmarked for 26 asylum-seeking mothers and babies as arson
Roman Court, a vacant former sheltered housing site in Leverington near Wisbech, was left 'severely damaged' by the blaze on Wednesday evening. Nobody was hurt. Firefighters from Wisbech, March, Dogsthorpe and Norfolk worked to contain the flames. The Home Office had informed Fenland District Council that the site could 'provide 26 bed spaces for mothers and babies'.
More than 200 people marched through Leverington, a village of around 3,000 residents, last week in opposition to the plans.
Fenland District Council's objection accused the Home Office of riding 'roughshod' over local agencies.
A Home Office decision was due on 16 October but has still not been made.
