Police detain organisers and security staff after stampede at Hindu festival in India kills at least 19

Police have detained pavilion organisers, private security guards and on-duty staff as they probe crowd-control and safety failures after a sudden downpour triggered a deadly crush at a Hindu festival in Kolkata. Chief minister Suvendu Adhikari said 25 people were still being treated at Kolkata Medical College and Hospital. He said a special investigation team headed by a High Court judge will examine what went wrong. Prime Minister Narendra Modi called the crush 'tragic'.

Police say worshippers fell on the road during the rush, triggering the deadly crush.

Kolkata's busiest venues were told to close temporarily, among around 3,500 festival pavilions.
