A woman unknown to the boy slapped him across the face on the Morpeth-to-Edinburgh service moments after it pulled into Waverley as its final stop at around 3pm on Saturday 24 October. Several passengers witnessed the assault on the child, who was travelling with a relative. British Transport Police have made no arrests and are urging witnesses to come forward.

The boy had no connection to the woman, making the attack entirely unprovoked.
