Police officer suffers 'serious facial injury' as 10 are arrested after Liverpool's hostile reception for Man City

A police officer was assaulted and left with a serious facial injury on Anfield Road as fans streamed out of Sunday's Premier League clash, with Merseyside Police confirming 10 arrests in total. The match was Manchester City's first since an independent commission found them guilty of 114 Premier League financial rule breaches, with Liverpool supporters greeting them with 'Shamchester City — The Cheats' scarves. The officer, who was taken to hospital, is now recovering at home after the incident at around 6.35pm.

One man was arrested on suspicion of two counts of assaulting a police constable; five others were held over alleged tragedy chanting.

City won the match 3-0 despite arriving through a staff entrance to avoid the hostile crowd, while fans held banners branding them 'cheats'.

Chief Inspector Leanne Hobin warned that chanting about tragedies 'causes huge distress to loved ones' and vowed to pursue prosecutions.
