A police officer sustained serious facial injuries after being assaulted during an arrest on Anfield Road as supporters departed Sunday's Liverpool versus Manchester City match. Ten people were detained in total across the policing operation, among them one man on suspicion of two counts of assaulting a constable. The officer received hospital treatment and has since been discharged to recover at home.
Five fans were taken into custody on suspicion of tragedy chanting under Section 5 of the Public Order Act, with arrests made both prior to and during the fixture.
The remaining detentions related to affray, drunk and disorderly conduct with assault, and throwing items onto the pitch.
Chief Inspector Leanne Hobin warned that chanting about disasters 'causes huge distress to the loved ones of people who died and has absolutely no place in football.'
