A Merseyside Police officer sustained serious facial injuries after being attacked while making an arrest on Anfield Road at around 6.35pm on Sunday, as supporters left Liverpool's 3-0 defeat to Manchester City. The officer received hospital treatment and has since been discharged to recover at home, while investigators examine CCTV and camera phone footage.
Five of the 10 arrests were on suspicion of tragedy chanting under the Public Order Act; others were detained for assaulting a constable, affray and throwing items onto the pitch.
Chief Inspector Leanne Hobin said it was 'extremely disappointing' an officer had been seriously hurt 'while carrying out that duty' and vowed to pursue all responsible.
The match was Manchester City's first since an independent commission found the club guilty of breaking Premier League financial rules across more than 100 charges.
