A police officer was hospitalised with serious facial injuries sustained while making an arrest on Anfield Road at around 6.35pm on Sunday, as supporters left Anfield after Liverpool's 3-0 defeat to Manchester City. The officer has since been discharged and is recovering at home, while Merseyside Police are examining CCTV and camera phone footage to identify those responsible.

Five of the 10 arrested were held on suspicion of tragedy chanting, with others facing charges of assaulting a constable, affray, drunk and disorderly, and throwing items onto the pitch.

Chief Inspector Leanne Hobin said it was 'extremely disappointing' that an officer sustained serious injury while protecting the public, and vowed anyone responsible for criminality would face justice.

The match was Manchester City's first following their guilty verdict on more than 100 charges of breaching Premier League financial rules, with Liverpool fans chanting 'cheats' throughout.
