Brendan Norris, 27, fired at least one shot at Newport officers who boarded the stolen luxury sailboat Pathfinder in Newport Harbour on 26 August, striking one cop in the leg before police returned fire in a 19-second barrage that killed him.

Norris had allegedly stolen the 1968 Hinckley Bermuda 40 from Liberty Harbor Marina in Jersey City on 22 August before anchoring it in Rhode Island.

One officer was hit in the leg by Norris's shot and in the face by shrapnel, but has since returned to work.

'I've got a suspect down. I have my eyes on him,' the wounded officer radioed after climbing into the cabin and finding Norris dead from a gunshot wound to the head.
