Police treat fire as arson at Leverington housing earmarked for 26 asylum-seeking mothers and babies after village protests

Roman Court, a disused sheltered housing site in Leverington, Cambridgeshire, was 'severely damaged' when fire broke out at 7.26pm on Wednesday. No injuries were reported. The Home Office had told Fenland District Council that the site could 'provide 26 bed spaces for mothers and babies', though a decision originally due on October 16 remains outstanding. Police are appealing for information.

A march through the village of around 3,000 people drew more than 200 participants last week.

Fenland District Council accused the Home Office of having 'ridden roughshod' over local procedure.
