The moped rider and his 16-year-old passenger, both from Sheppey, fled into an alleyway beside Sheppey Leisure Centre in Sheerness at around 7:50pm on Saturday after being approached on foot by Kent Police officers. Officers administered immediate first aid to the 18-year-old, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.

The 16-year-old passenger is receiving treatment in critical condition at a London hospital.

Kent Police has made a mandatory referral to the Independent Office for Police Conduct, which has opened an investigation.

Flowers have been left at the alleyway, and Kent Police is appealing for witnesses or anyone with dashcam footage to come forward, quoting reference RY/JM/088/26.
