The moped fled through an alleyway beside Sheppey Leisure Centre in Sheerness shortly before 7.50pm on Saturday, after officers on foot did no more than walk towards the rider. The 18-year-old man from Sheppey died at the scene despite receiving first aid, and his 16-year-old passenger was rushed to a London hospital.

Kent Police made a mandatory referral to the Independent Office for Police Conduct, which has opened a formal investigation.

Police are urging anyone with witness accounts, CCTV or dashcam footage to submit them via their online portal, quoting reference RY/JM/088/26.
