Just one in three Britons says they would take up arms for the UK, an Ipsos poll finds
An Ipsos poll finds just one in three Britons would take up arms to defend the UK, highlighting a significant NATO readiness gap.The poll also places Britain's willingness to fight among the lowest of any NATO member nation, underlining what experts warn is a critical alliance readiness gap.
Nearly half of Britons — 48% — would not take up arms for their country under any circumstances, an Ipsos survey of 1,090 adults conducted between 29 September and 1 October has found. Just 36% said they would fight, with the remainder undecided. The results come as NATO's Supreme Allied Commander, US General Alexus Grynkewich, has declared the alliance is "ready to fight tonight," and Russia has warned Britain of consequences after long-range drones struck deep inside Russian territory.
A majority — 51% — back increased defence spending even if it requires borrowing or tax rises, but that support erodes sharply once personal costs are made explicit.
The UK's National Security Strategy 2025 warns that British territory could face direct military threat, including Russian cyberattacks, sabotage and covert attacks.
