Pope Leo's surgeon sees 'no clinical reasons' to block his Latin America trip after early discharge following lung cancer surgery

Pope Leo XIV was discharged from Rome's Gemelli Hospital on Saturday, three days ahead of schedule, greeting well-wishers with the words 'I am much better, thank you.' Surgeon Dr Stefano Margaritora anticipates the 71-year-old will make a full recovery 'in another 10 days or so.' The pontiff made his way unassisted to a black SUV. He is expected to give the Angelus blessing from the Apostolic Palace window at noon today.

Tuesday's operation, which confirmed adenocarcinoma, removed the right lung's lower lobe.

Whether the cancer has spread remains unknown, with test results yet to be released.

Varvara, a 13-year-old Ukrainian cancer survivor, came to return the hug he once gave her.
