Pope Leo XIV is set to leave Rome's Gemelli hospital on Saturday, only four days after undergoing lung cancer surgery. His personal physician and surgeon declared him 'deemed fit for discharge' after that morning's blood tests and chest X-ray. The 71-year-old is expected back at the Vatican by early afternoon; on Sunday he will deliver the traditional noon blessing from a window overlooking St Peter's Square. Neither the tumour's size nor whether it had spread to his lymph nodes has been disclosed.
Surgeons removed the right lung's lower lobe, and the tissue was confirmed as adenocarcinoma.
From his hospital bed, Leo called Vladimir Putin to urge a ceasefire in occupied Oleshky.
His November 6–17 tour of Uruguay, Argentina and Peru remains 'going forward'.
