Pope Leo is to lead Sunday's Angelus after leaving hospital three days early following lung cancer surgery

Pope Leo XIV, 71, walked unaided out of Rome's Gemelli Hospital on Saturday, telling well-wishers 'I am better, thank you'. He reached the Vatican gates ten minutes later. Surgeons on Tuesday removed the lower lobe of his right lung, with tissue analysis confirming adenocarcinoma; results showing whether the cancer has spread are still pending. Cardinal Pietro Parolin said the November trip to Uruguay, Argentina and Peru depends on his recovery.

Ukrainian cancer survivor Varvara, 13, travelled to Rome to return the Pope's hug.

From his hospital bed, Leo urged Vladimir Putin by phone to seek a Ukraine truce.

All papal audiences remain cancelled until 20 October despite the early discharge.
