Pope Leo is to leave a Rome hospital on Saturday, four days after lung cancer surgery removed part of his lung

Pope Leo XIV's doctors have declared him 'deemed fit for discharge' after blood tests and a chest X-ray on Saturday morning. The 71-year-old is set to return to the Vatican from Gemelli Hospital in the early afternoon. Tuesday's operation removed the lower lobe of his right lung and confirmed adenocarcinoma, the most common lung cancer. He will deliver Sunday's noon blessing from a window over St Peter's Square.

From his hospital bed, Leo phoned Vladimir Putin urging a ceasefire in besieged Oleshky.

His November 6-17 trip to Uruguay, Argentina and Peru is still 'going forward'.

Friday's first images since surgery showed him celebrating Mass and standing unaided.
