Pope Leo says he is 'much better' after returning to the Vatican just four days after lung cancer surgery

His surgeon, Dr Stefano Margaritora, says there are 'no clinical reasons' to stop the 71-year-old's 6-17 November trip to Uruguay, Peru and Argentina. Pope Leo XIV left Rome's Gemelli Hospital three days earlier than planned after surgeons removed the right lung's lower lobe on Tuesday. Tests confirmed adenocarcinoma. He is due to lead the Angelus from the Apostolic Palace window today.

Varvara, 13, a Ukrainian cancer survivor, handed him a homemade papal doll as he left.

From his hospital bed, he urged Vladimir Putin to allow food and aid into Oleshky.

Findings on whether the cancer has metastasised have yet to be released.
