Pope Leo vows to 'gradually resume' duties from the same Vatican window where he revealed his lung nodule a week ago

Pope Leo XIV, 71, addressed the crowd in a strong voice only four days after Tuesday's surgery, during which surgeons removed the lower lobe of his right lung. The operation confirmed a diagnosis of adenocarcinoma — the most prevalent form of lung cancer. He was discharged from Rome's Gemelli Hospital on Saturday, sooner than the week-long stay doctors had initially expected. Thousands of people in St Peter's Square cheered when he stepped unassisted to the Apostolic Palace window.

He told the crowd the ordeal made him feel 'especially close to those facing illness'.

No information on his prognosis has been made public, and further test results are still awaited.

An African delegation danced and ululated, with one member saying 'we are happy to see him today'.
