Pope Leo walks unaided from Rome hospital just four days after lung cancer surgery and will lead Sunday prayers

Pope Leo XIV walked out of Gemelli Hospital on his own, making his way to a waiting black SUV and telling well-wishers: 'I am better, thank you.' His surgeon, Dr Stefano Margaritora, saw him out after discharge was cleared by blood tests and a chest X-ray. Tuesday's operation excised the lower lobe of his right lung and returned a diagnosis of adenocarcinoma. It is not yet known whether the cancer has spread elsewhere in his body, as results have not been made public.

Leo, 71, called Vladimir Putin from his hospital bed, urging a humanitarian truce in Oleshky.

Ukrainian cancer survivor Varvara, 13, travelled from Turin to return the Pope's hug.

His November trip to Uruguay, Argentina and Peru still hangs in the balance.
