Pope Leo XIV cancels Assisi peace trip on doctors' advice despite being told he needs no further cancer treatment

Tuesday's major interfaith peace gathering in Assisi will go ahead without the pontiff while he recovers from last week's thoracic surgery, the Vatican said on Friday. Surgeons removed a tumour from his right lung at Rome's Gemelli Hospital on October 13. Dr Luigi Carbone and Professor Stefano Margaritora said on Wednesday the lung adenocarcinoma was localised. They confirmed no further treatment is needed.
Thousands chanted 'Papa!' outside Gemelli Hospital when he was discharged on Saturday.
Before leaving, he visited young patients on the hospital's children's oncology ward.
He was back addressing crowds in St Peter's Square on October 21.
