Pope Leo XIV cancels Assisi trip on doctors' advice to avoid a helicopter flight after lung cancer surgery

A follow-up chest examination showed the 71-year-old pontiff is recovering well, but his surgeon and doctors urged caution so soon after the operation. He had been due in the Italian town on 27 October for the 40th anniversary of St John Paul II's World Day of Prayer for Peace. He will instead send a message titled 'Disarmed and Disarming Peace'. Surgeons removed the lower lobe of his right lung on 13 October.

Doctors Luigi Carbone and Stefano Margaritora say no further cancer treatment is needed.

The Assisi meeting marks John Paul II's landmark 1986 interfaith peace gathering.

Thousands shouted 'Papa!' as he left Rome's Gemelli Hospital after his surgery.
