Portuguese riot police move in with dogs and batons to clear protest camps, as the housing movement they targeted drew inspiration from comparable tent demonstrations held in Madrid.

Officers armed with batons and accompanied by dogs moved in to dismantle housing protest encampments in Lisbon and Porto early Sunday, detaining 31 people in total.

Demonstrators linked arms and chanted 'smells like a dictatorship' as police advanced shortly before 2am. Authorities report that 11 people were injured, among them three officers, though campaign group Casa para Viver puts the figure at 60. A total of 171 structures were demolished, including roughly 130 tents in Lisbon's Rossio Square. The 25 people arrested in Lisbon are due in court on Monday.

Catarina dos Santos said there were at least 20 'clearly agitated' crowd-control dogs at the camp.

Left Bloc MP Fabian Figueiredo called the police action 'completely disproportionate'.

Since 2017, home prices in Portugal have more than doubled, and the country faces a shortfall of 300,000 homes.
