Portuguese riot police with dogs and batons clear housing protest camps in Lisbon and Porto, arresting 31
Portuguese riot police, backed by dogs and batons, moved in shortly after 2am on Sunday to clear more than 100 tents from Lisbon's Rossio Square and around 50 from Dom João I Square in Porto. The camps had been established in the wake of marches by thousands of people furious that housing costs have soared well beyond ordinary wage levels. Protesters charge that the government has ignored the crisis while pushing through rent reforms that make it easier to evict tenants. The movement drew inspiration from comparable tent protests held in Madrid.
Police called the raids 'proportionate' and designated the camps 'illegal encampments'.
Casa Para Viver says 37 protesters were injured, whereas police put the figure at eight civilians.
Twenty-five people held in Lisbon were released but must appear in court on Monday.
