Private dental patients stuck in 'broken' complaints system with no effective route to redress, Which? warns

Consumer watchdog Which? has warned that private dental patients facing botched treatments or surprise charges have no effective route to redress. One patient accumulated costs exceeding £10,000 after a series of failed root canal treatments, despite an original quote of £3,400, and decided against seeking full compensation because they feared losing access to dental care. Which? polled 1,009 private patients who had run into difficulties over the previous two years; 39% considered the costs excessive, 22% ended up paying above the quoted price, and one in 10 reported a direct clinical mistake.
One patient said his practice refused to book routine check-ups after he queried a £125 billing error — leaving him feeling 'held ransom'.
The British Dental Association pushed back, saying Which?'s sample was drawn entirely from patients who had already experienced problems, calling it 'entirely misleading' to treat as representative.
New ONS data from 8,336 recent private patients found 93.5% were satisfied with their care — a figure Which?'s investigation did not highlight.
