Private school teacher banned after admitting he smoked crystal meth 'to relax' at £37,500-a-year London school

Charles Miles, 64, has been indefinitely banned from teaching after a tribunal found he showed "limited insight and/or remorse" for smoking crystal meth while employed at Dwight School in north London. Officers discovered his habit in November 2024 when they visited his Hackney flat following a water-damage report he had made, and concluded it was "clear" he was using the class A drug. Miles told school management his use was a "private matter" and that he was "pretty controlled", maintaining that meth helped him "relax". The Teaching Regulation Agency panel concluded he had committed serious misconduct.

Miles had taught at Dwight School since 1985 — close to four decades — delivering EAL tuition and learning support to primary-age pupils.

He told his employers: 'They're concerned about that crystal meth use but as I am trying to explain I am not addicted to it.'

The school, which has sister campuses in New York, Dubai, Hanoi, Shanghai and Seoul, raised concerns about his "presentation, wellbeing and professional functioning" before reporting him to the authorities.
