Revolutionary Communist Party activists climbed onto the Battle of Britain memorial on Victoria Embankment during Saturday's pro-Palestine march, trampling and smashing commemorative poppy wreaths laid to honour the RAF's Second World War dead. Six were arrested for criminal damage after footage showed protesters waving RCP flags and a banner reading "Imperialists must die" atop the monument while chanting "Everyone hates the police". A total of 20 arrests were made across the demonstration, including one woman for a racially aggravated offence after she was seen making a Nazi salute, and one person for assaulting a police officer.
Conservative MP Nick Timothy said of those who desecrated the memorial: 'There is no word for these people but scum.'
Two further protesters were arrested for displaying placards supporting Palestine Action, a proscribed organisation banned under terrorism laws.
Organisers claim 250,000 attended the march — held just days after the third anniversary of the October 7 Hamas attacks.
