Putin is forced to buy £119m of prosthetic limbs from Nato for troops maimed in his Ukraine war

Germany sold Russia £66m worth of artificial limbs in the first half of 2026 alone — a five-fold increase on pre-war levels — as the scale of casualties from Putin's invasion overwhelms domestic production. The Netherlands supplied a further £29m and Belgium £21m, with total EU prosthetics imports reaching £126m in just six months.
Ukraine mocked the purchases: 'You're at war with Nato — you could have ordered from friendly North Korea or Myanmar.'
Russia gave out 152,661 artificial arms and legs in 2024, up from 99,515 the year before, as wounded troops flood back from the front.
The £119m could instead have funded 1,000 new schools and 200 hospitals, Kyiv pointed out — while Putin has so far suffered 1.58 million total casualties.
