Putin is forced to buy prosthetic arms and legs from Nato countries for soldiers maimed in his Ukraine war

Russia imported £126 million worth of prosthetics from EU countries in the first half of 2026 alone, with Germany supplying £66 million of artificial limbs and joints — more than five times its pre-war exports to Russia. Belgium and the Netherlands, both Nato members, also fulfilled Kremlin orders. The scale of demand reflects an estimated 1.2 million Russian soldiers killed, wounded or missing since February 2022.
Russia's disabled citizens received 152,661 artificial arms and legs from the government in 2024, up from 99,515 the year before.
One Ukrainian report mocked the Kremlin: 'You're at war with Nato — you could have ordered from North Korea or Myanmar.'
The prosthetics bill could have funded 1,000 new schools and 200 hospitals, or paid every Russian child born since the war around £9,400 each.
