Vladimir Putin took the wheel of the new Volga K50 SUV during a visit to a factory in Nizhny Novgorod on Friday, while Russian attacks on Kyiv stretched into a third consecutive day. The K50 is built on a Chinese-developed platform at a plant that was previously run by Volkswagen, marrying Soviet nostalgia with Chinese technology. Putin signed the bonnet of one of the vehicles and held talks with the regional governor during the visit.

The Volga nameplate was once among the USSR's most iconic automotive brands and has now been revived on a Chinese-developed platform.

Putin previously drove a Renault F1 car at speeds of up to 240kph in 2010 and is reported to have worked as a taxi driver following the Soviet collapse in 1991.

As Putin took part in the factory's promotional activities, Ukrainian sources said his forces had hit Kyiv for the third day running.
