RAF Typhoons will fly missions to shield Saudi Arabia from Houthi drones as Defence Secretary brands attacks 'absolutely despicable'
Riyadh's King Khalid International Airport has been targeted 20 times this month. Strikes on October 10 and 11 left 14 people dead and more than 300 wounded. Defence Secretary Wes Streeting told Parliament the jets will operate in a purely defensive capacity and will not enter Yemeni airspace. He said the conflict is heaping cost pressures onto British households, and an Atlas A400M transport plane and military advisers will also be deployed.
Prime Minister Andy Burnham's earlier RAF refuelling mission has been granted a further 90-day extension.
The jets are being dispatched following a formal request for assistance from Saudi Arabia's government.
A Houthi strike on Monday killed 58 people at a Saudi-backed training camp in Yemen.
