Vivek Ramaswamy doubles down with $4m for Ohio ad in which Amy Acton's estranged mother brands her a 'liar'

Republican Vivek Ramaswamy admitted on Tuesday night that his campaign produced the spot: 'It is an ad from our campaign.' He said Democrat Amy Acton refuses to debate him and accused her of spreading 'defamatory, disparaging lies' about his family. In the clip, Donna Arthur says: 'She's lied her entire life.' Acton was removed from Arthur's home in 1978, aged 12, after Arthur's husband was charged with raping her.

Acton's brother Philip Stearns called the ad a 'despicable low' that exploits her abuse.

The campaign says Donna Arthur was not paid, and Ramaswamy says he has 'never met' her.

Recent polls put Ramaswamy up to seven points behind ahead of the 3 November election.
