Michael Bogle, 38, a registered sex offender with 100 convictions, was back behind bars within days of being freed under Labour's early release scheme after stealing laundry detergent from Sainsbury's just 24 hours after walking out of HMP Wandsworth. Metropolitan Police Assistant Commissioner Matt Twist called the speed of reoffending "astonishing", while north-west London borough commander Luke Williams wrote to local politicians warning the scheme was simply transferring prison pressures onto frontline policing.
Bogle told reporters outside Wandsworth: 'Keep the early release going. It's good' — then said he planned to celebrate 'by having some kebabs'.
Officers spent an entire day hunting Bogle, who has 16 convictions linked to over 100 investigations including indecent exposure.
Shadow Home Secretary Chris Philp shared Williams's letter, branding the case a damning indictment of Burnham's prison relief scheme.
