Republican congressman Andy Harris threatens to prosecute student journalist for recording a public news conference — then gets the law wrong
University of Maryland student Cat Murphy was threatened with prosecution by Rep. Andy Harris after recording him in a crowded hallway following an Oct. 13 debate with Democratic challenger Dan Schwartz. Harris insisted Maryland's two-party consent law barred her from recording without his permission, pointing in her face and declaring 'I'm a legislator — I actually know the law well.' Harris was wrong: the recording took place at a public news conference where multiple other journalists were already filming. Harris has since defended himself, saying he 'pushed back' and 'liberal media got offended.'
