Retired decorator becomes a millionaire after Pokémon cards forgotten in his attic for 15 years sell for £1.56m
One set the Woking grandfather bought for £300 from a Malaysian eBay seller in the late 1990s fetched £75,000 on Wednesday. He began buying sealed sets when his son started swapping cards at school, but the boy 'never got to touch these'. The 42 mint-condition binders were valued at £250,000. Bidding at Ewbank's in Surrey smashed that sixfold.
He only checked the attic after reading that a single card had sold for over £6,000.
A Legendary Collection set with a near-mint Charizard went for £100,000 against a £20,000 estimate.
Auctioneer Andrew Ewbank told bidders afterwards he was 'going for a lie down'.
