Reversing lorry smashes Cricklade's 'iconic' 125-year-old Jubilee clock to pieces in Wiltshire as the crash is caught on camera

Cricklade's Grade II listed Jubilee clock, built in 1897 to mark Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee, was flattened by a reversing lorry at around 10pm on Tuesday night. The cast-iron landmark shattered on impact, its pole ripped from the base and the top smashed off, with police tape surrounding the debris on the High Street by Wednesday morning. Town council chairman Mark Clarke called it "a hell of a mess" and said it was "a sad day" for the town.
The 125-year-old clock has survived one previous vehicle strike — a military lorry knocked it down in 1945, after which its face was rebuilt.
The council has already contacted its insurers and says residents can "rest assured" it will take "urgent action to return it to its full glory."
Ceri Whitehead, a 12-year Cricklade resident, described the noise of the collision as "massive crates falling off the back of a lorry."
