Rhodes weather update issued after flash floods kill hotel worker and trigger Greek island state of emergency

A 62-year-old hotel worker died after surging floodwaters swept his car onto a beach at Stegna, a coastal village south of Rhodes Town, as the island recorded 264mm of rain in a single day. Emergency services fielded over 100 distress calls, carried out 13 evacuations and ran 64 water-pumping operations across the stricken island. Roads in Ialysos, Faliraki, Afandou and Archangelos were submerged, stranding dozens of vehicles, while schools remain closed today for damage assessments.
Authorities declared a state of emergency across Rhodes after the National Observatory of Athens recorded 202mm of rain in just six and a half hours.
Four cars were dragged into the sea by floodwaters, a massive rockslide blocked the Archangelos-Malona road, and lightning struck a house in Ialysos, sparking a fire.
Residents across Rhodes and other Aegean islands are being urged to limit travel to essential journeys only, with multiple bus routes suspended.
