Rioters set fire to France's 143-year-old Limoges Town Hall as 'ultra-left' unrest spreads to Lyon and Marseille

The roof has collapsed onto the lower floors, with roughly two-thirds of the exterior destroyed, local prefect Maurice Barate said, describing it as 'a catastrophe for heritage'. He attributed the damage to 'a deliberate act by hooligans'. The building dates from 1883 and was listed as a historic landmark in 1975. Outgoing President Emmanuel Macron vowed that rioters who looted town halls 'will be prosecuted and punished'.

Rioters burned Lyon's tourist office, which Mayor Grégory Doucet called 'a tragedy' for the city.

In Marseille, protesters stormed the city hall and toppled a bust of Marianne.

The unrest has left at least 1,200 people in custody and 150 police officers with injuries.
