Romania's parliament confirms a non-party diplomat as prime minister to end five months of deadlock and stave off snap elections

The populist AUR, which has led the polls with support approaching 40 percent, branded the new cabinet a 'puppet government' and refused to back it. Luca Niculescu, 55, won 280 votes, comfortably above the 233 he needed. He was the fourth candidate to try to form a government since the coalition collapsed in May. The deal expires in six months.
Grindeanu's Social Democrats join the cabinet, while Bolojan's liberals back it from outside.
Niculescu is a former ambassador to France and once ran RFI Romania.
'There is a war on Romania's borders,' Niculescu warned MPs.
