Romanian MPs back independent Luca Niculescu as prime minister after six months of crisis, dodging the snap elections populists wanted

Luca Niculescu won 280 votes, comfortably clearing the 233 needed, as the fourth nominee to try after three failed attempts. The populist AUR, polling near 40 percent, refused to back him and branded his team a 'puppet government'. The deal holding his minority cabinet together expires in six months. 'Romania cannot wait any longer,' Niculescu said, promising a first cabinet meeting this evening.

The crisis began in May, when PSD and AUR jointly ousted prime minister Ilie Bolojan.

Niculescu, 55, is a former ambassador to France and an ex-journalist.

PSD leader Sorin Grindeanu wants a 2027 budget passed by the end of November.
